Man, 90, prepares to walk 90 miles for charity

A 90-year-old is preparing to walk 90 miles over nine consecutive days to raise funds for survivors of domestic abuse.

Derrick Downs, sets off on the day of his milestone birthday on Wednesday from Dover and hopes to raise £9,000 for the charity Oasis.

The pensioner, from Margate in Kent, has spent months rigorously training for the endeavour, which is planned to culminate in his home town on 30 January.

He said he was "excited to take on the challenge" and looking forward to using his milestone birthday as a "moment to give back".

Mr Downs said: "Oasis has been a cause close to my heart for decades, and I want to ensure their life-changing services reach more people.

"I am committed to making a difference.

"I'm also very much looking forward to all the beautiful Kentish scenery along the way."

His journey will pass through iconic Kent locations, including the North Downs Way, Canterbury, Herne Bay, Whitstable and Folkestone.

Mr Downs has been supporting Oasis for over 25 years.

It provides support to domestic abuse survivors, offering safe accommodation, outreach programmes, and education to help adults and children rebuild their lives.
