Object thrown at windscreen of moving van

A driver and his passenger "narrowly escaped" injury as an object was thrown at a moving van.

The windscreen of a grey Peugeot Boxer van was damaged by an item launched "possibly from the bridge overhead", police added.

It happened on the southbound carriageway of the A19, near Billingham Bottoms, Teesside, at about 10:00 GMT, Cleveland Police said.

Officers searched the area for the suspect, the force said, and an investigation was under way.

The van's window did not fully go through, so the driver was able to make his way to a safe stopping place and report it to police.
