Endon kids win Lego tournament

Pupils taking part in a regional Lego tournament have praised the "once in a lifetime experience".

More than 100 young people from 18 different schools took part in an ocean-themed competition held at Newcastle College in Staffordshire.

A team of four boys from Endon High School in Staffordshire were crowned the victors and will progress onto the UK final in May.

“It’s definitely not just about building models,” explained 11 year-old Maya, “we've had to do an innovation project to help protect the ocean and we've also had to code a robot.”

Competitors from primary and secondary schools were asked to design, create and programme a robot to complete a series of tasks on the day.

Pupils from RGS The Grange travelled from Worcester to take part and said they had thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

“This probably won't happen again for us,” said Josh, “it’s like a once in a lifetime experience.”

A crowd of approximately 40 children gather around a large table covered by a map. Lego models are sat on the map. A child in the left corner can be seen adjusting one of the models.
Schools from as far as Northamptonshire took part in building, coding and logistical challenges

They took home a trophy constructed from Lego bricks for their efforts but it was a team from Endon that were voted overall winners by the team of judges.

Owen, Malachi, Harry and James have dedicated their breaks during school and hours during the evening to practicing.

“It’s just amazing. I can't believe that we've done it,” said 14 year-old Owen. “We've wanted this since Year 7 and finally we’re holding this trophy.”

The four teens will compete against the best in country at the finals in Harrogate on 3 May.
