A man has been taken to hospital after being assaulted by masked men in east Belfast on Wednesday evening.

The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) said they received a report, shortly before 20:00 GMT, of five masked men armed with hammers, who "broke their way" into a flat in Templemore Street.

The man, who is in his 30s, suffered injuries to his head and body and was taken to hospital for treatment.

Police later received a report that a motorcycle had been set alight in a communal hallway at the same address at about 05.35 GMT on Thursday morning.

Det Sgt McCartan said: "Colleagues from Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Services attended and extinguished the fire, luckily no one was injured.

"We are treating both incidents as linked."

Police have appealed for information.
