A man joked about feeling "really terrible" after gatecrashing Sir David Beckham's meal with his mother.

The former England football captain was celebrating being knighted by eating at a pie and mash shop in Waltham Abbey, Essex, on Monday.

Pesh Kapashiawala saw the 50-year-old through a window and said he could not resist grabbing a selfie.

"I'll be there every day waiting for him to come back," Mr Kapashiawala laughed after the chance meeting.

Sir David revealed his mother, Sandra, was overcome with emotion at the celebratory meal after he was named in the King's Birthday Honours on Friday.

"Mum cried when she arrived, cried during lunch and cried when I was leaving," he posted to his 88 million followers on Instagram.

He described it as a "special moment for us all".

Mr Kapashiawala said he was grateful to the former Manchester United, Real Madrid and LA Galaxy star for still making time to chat.

"We saw him from the outside and thought we'd take a chance and say hello," he told BBC Essex.

"He was having an intimate moment with his mother ...I feel really terrible now because we impinged on this intimate moment."

Mr Kapashiawala revealed Sir David listened to him talk about his foodbank charity, 3Food4U, and offered encouragement.

He added: "I have to say hats off to him, because he was clearly in the moment and still he found time to have a quick chat with us."
