A man who reportedly left his car on the M4 in Wiltshire was left with serious injuries after being hit by a car.

The empty green Vauxhall Corsa was hit by a Ford Transit after being left in a lane on the eastbound carriageway of the M4 at 19:30 on Thursday, Wiltshire Police said.

Three people, all travelling in the van, were also injured in the crash.

A few minutes later a man wearing dark clothing, believed to be the Corsa driver, was then struck by a Skoda on the westbound carriageway slip road to Leigh Delamere services, police added.

He is believed to have crossed the motorway on foot after abandoning the car.

A police spokesperson said the man remained in hospital with serious injuries, with South West Ambulance Service confirming one patient had been taken by road to Royal United Hospital Bath.

Police have urged any witnesses to the incident, or drivers who may have dashcam footage, to get in touch.

Traffic was brought to a standstill for several hours on Thursday night, with the motorway only fully reopened at around 05:00 GMT on Friday.

Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service (DWFRS) said it were called at 19:43 GMT to a crash between a van and a car, with four crews attending the scene.

In a statement they added that firefighters "supported emergency service partners with casualty care and scene safety", before being stood down at 22:34.
