Two radio presenters are getting a big break on the national airwaves this Christmas - after getting their own shows on BBC Radio 1.

Kitty Perrin, a former University of East Anglia (UEA) student, and Matt Hallsworth, from Harleston, Norfolk, are part of this year's Radio 1 Christmas Takeover.

It gives rising talent the chance to host a one-off show on the biggest youth radio station in the UK.

Hallsworth, 20, described being chosen as a "pinch me moment".

He said he hoped he could use it as a "calling card" to help him chase job opportunities in the highly-competitive industry.

Hallsworth, who is on Salford University's Shock Radio, was recently crowned the best presenter with the best chart show at this year's Student Radio Awards.

Perrin, 24, moved from Brighton to study history and politics at the UEA in Norwich.

She has hosted BBC Music Introducing in Norfolk, which supports unsigned artists, and The Social, a show made by and for young people.

"Every time you walk into [a BBC] building it feels a bit surreal," she said.

Even before her days at Radio Norfolk, each year Kitty submitted applications to be part of the Radio 1 Christmas Takeover.

Shocked to receive the call which told this year's applicants they had been successful, she thought: "What's the catch?"

The head of Radio 1, Aled Haydn Jones, said: "Christmas Takeover is not just about giving new presenters a platform, but about shaping the future of radio itself and it has been incredibly rewarding to see this initiative thrive over the past five years and see the successes it has created."

Hallsworth's early breakfast playlist is on air on Sunday, 29 December at 06:00 GMT.

Perrin's future artists show is on Monday, 30 December at 20:00 GMT.
