An investigation into a suspected arson attack at a bar in Birmingham city centre has been launched after a fire forced tram services to be suspended.

Firefighters were called to reports of the blaze at the Coyote Ugly bar, in Broad Street, shortly before 04:00 GMT on Tuesday.

Emergency vehicles blocked tram lines as the fire was dealt with, leaving services unable to operate between the Library of Birmingham and Edgbaston Village.

West Midlands Police have confirmed that they have now launched an investigation into the cause of the blaze.

Detectives said a sign and part of a door had allegedly been set on fire outside the bar.

Firefighters, who forced their way into the bar to isolate its electrics, left the scene at 05:50 GMT.

West Midlands Metro posted on its X account before 05:30 GMT on Tuesday - with trams confirmed to be running again within the hour.
