A hospital consultant has admitted attempting to engage in sexual communication with a child.

Dr Matthew Isles, 52, was working as an ear, nose and throat consultant at Royal Stoke University Hospital and County Hospital, Stafford.

Staffordshire Police said Isles, from the Cheadle area, was arrested on Monday following an investigation and charged on Tuesday.

He is due to be sentenced at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court on 11 April.

North Staffordshire Justice Centre said Isles indicated a guilty plea on Tuesday and was granted conditional bail before his sentencing.

In a statement, the University Hospitals of North Midlands NHS Trust (UHNM) said it could not comment on an active criminal case but was continuing to co-operate with police.

"Patient and staff safety remains our top priority and we would encourage anyone who is concerned about the care they have received at our hospital to contact our Patient Advice and Liaison Service," it added.
