Staff at a Kent hospital have been recognised with a national award for their work.

Ophthalmic technicians Sunitha Freddy and Kevin Taylor, who work at the Kent and Canterbury Hospital, received a chief nursing officer (CNO) award from NHS England after being nominated by colleagues.

Healthcare assistant Helen Garlinge, who works on Kent ward at the hospital, also received an award.

The award celebrates support workers who "make a real difference to their patients and colleagues" and recognises the "vital role they play".

Ms Freddy was highlighted for her care for vulnerable patients whilst Mr Taylor was nominated for being "popular with staff and patients".

Ms Garlinge was recognised for her "compassion and commitment to her patients".

Ophthalmic technician Nurjahan Ema, who nominated Ms Freddy, said: "Sunitha knows how to make people feel comfortable and cared for and has a great sense of humour too."

Specialist surgery matron Martine Henniker, who nominated Mr Taylor, said: "The relationship that he builds with the patient and their loved ones over their potentially multiple visits enables them to feel informed and safe."

Ward sister Olivia Jubber, who nominated Ms Garlinge, said: "Where Helen shines the most is as a compassionate advocate for her patients."
