Five people have been taken to hospital due to the effects of smoke inhalation, after a fire at a takeaway in north London.

It took 100 firefighters over four hours to get the blaze under control after it broke out at 03:45 GMT on Thursday on Seven Sisters Road in Holloway.

The ground-floor restaurant was destroyed and its roof also collapsed the London Fire Brigade (LFB) said. Part of two flats on the first and second floors were also damaged by the fire.

The cause of the fire is unknown but is being investigated by LFB and the Metropolitan Police.

The brigade has urged people to stay away from the area.

A spokesperson for the London Ambulance Service said the casualties were treated at the scene before being taken to hospital.

They said: "We sent a number of resources to the scene including ambulance crews, a paramedic in a fast response car, an incident response officer, an advanced paramedic and members of our Hazardous Area Response Team."

LFB said it received 19 calls about the blaze and 15 fire engines attended the scene including crews from Kentish Town, Islington, and Euston.

At a fire in West Hampstead, about 25 people had to be moved to safety

The fire service also sent 10 fire engines and around 70 firefighters to a separate fire in West Hampstead on Thursday which was brought under control at about 05:20.

The blaze broke out at a end-of-terrace house converted into flats on Lyncroft Gardens.

Part of the roof of the building was alight and firefighters evacuated around 25 people to safety, but there were no reports of any injuries.

Station Commander Ken Spratt, who was at the scene, said: "West Hampstead Fire Station has been set up as a rest centre for residents affected by the fire."

The first call was made to LFB at 03:09 and crews from West Hampstead, Paddington, North Kensington, Hendon and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.
