Creative digital hub receives further funding

A hub for digital creative industries in Kent has received further funding as building work is set to begin.

Plans for the University of Kent's Docking Station, which will be based inside the Historic Dockyard Chatham, were approved in January.

The project has now received funding of £300,000 from the Colyer-Fergusson Charitable Trust to "help provide new skills and access to digital creative careers" for young people.

The grant will "allow people in Medway to access immersive technologies including virtual and augments reality", a spokesperson said.

The project involves converting the Grade II-listed Police Section House at the former dockyard site.

The £13.4m development was able to proceed in April after receiving £3.5m of funding from National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Building work is expected to be completed in 2026.

Professor Shane Weller, the university’s deputy vice-chancellor for research and innovation, said the "very exciting project" would "benefit a diverse range of people and industries" across Medway.

It would provide access to new and emerging technologies, as well as the opportunity "to participate in and learn from cutting-edge creative projects," he added.

Medway Council said the project is a "key part" of regeneration plans for the historic waterside site.
