A six-week roadwork project involving overnight lane closures and a reduced speed limit has begun.

Work to replace some of the safety barriers on the A1058 Coast Road, which connects Newcastle to North Shields, started on Monday.

The speed limit will drop to 30mph at all times and the outside lanes will be closed in both directions between 19:00 and 06:00.

North Tyneside Council has apologised for any inconvenience and said its team “will work hard to minimise disturbance”.

The council added that most of the excavation works will be carried out by hand, and “the noisiest works”, like cutting barriers and drilling, will be carried out earlier in the evening “wherever possible”.

The 70mph limit will be reinstated after the work between the Wills Building and Silverlink junction has been completed.

The A1058 is a major commuter route connecting Jesmond to Tynemouth.

Since October 2023, a temporary 50mph speed limit has been in place on a section of the Coast Road.

It was introduced as a precaution after a central reservation safety barrier showed evidence of corrosion.
