A river footbridge has reopened after it was closed over concerns of "structural issues".

A Conservators of the River Cam external survey raised issues about the structural soundness of Jesus Green Lock in Cambridge and Baits Bite Lock in Milton.

In response, Cambridgeshire County Council - which is responsible for footpaths - decided to close the footbridges.

A structural inspection by council's engineers found Jesus Green Lock footbridge was now safe to reopen, but assessment work will continue on the Milton footbridge.

The council previously acknowledged the closure would be "disappointing" for residents, especially with the Cambridge Beer Festival taking place this week.

A council spokesperson said: "After being temporarily closed on Tuesday, bridge surveys were carried out on Wednesday by the council.

"We are satisfied the concerns with the lock islands do not pose an issue for the bridge structures and it is safe to reopen Jesus Green Lock footbridge.

"It will be monitored on a weekly basis."

Alternative pedestrian routes for Baits Bite Lock footbridge are Clayhithe Road Bridge or the Abbey-Chesterton footbridge.

Diversion signage was put in place to advise pedestrians on alternative routes.
