Hundreds of girls attend engineering festival

More than 600 girls have attended a festival aimed at getting them into careers in technology and engineering.

The 'Reach for the Sky' event - the first festival of its kind in Cornwall - took place in a hanger at RNAS Culdrose on Saturday.

Workshops included 3D printers, robots and virtual reality, with a paper plane competition and rocket shows featuring a rocket car, a jet engine and fireballs.

An aircraft display featured an F35 and the female pilots spoke to the girls about flying jets.

Caitlin Gould, chief of TecGirls which organised the event, said it was "a game-changer".

"The energy, excitement and enthusiasm from these young girls were off the charts," she said.

"Watching them dive into tech and engineering with such passion was incredibly inspiring."

The day held role model panels in which girls met female pilots and women working in aerospace and engineering.

Ms Gould said the festival was set up in response to Cornwall having some of the lowest participation rates of girls in technology and engineering across the country.
