Crash victim's family 'forever thankful' for rescue efforts

The family of man killed in a car crash say they will be "forever thankful" for the efforts of those who tried to save his life.

George Jackson died at the scene following a collision between a Toyota RAV and a Honda Civic on the A595 at Bothel, near Aspatria, Cumbria, at approximately 00:25 BST on Monday.

The 75-year-old, from Wigton, was described by his loved ones as "one of a kind" and "unforgettable".

A 33-year-old man from County Tyrone, Northern Ireland, has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving. He is due to appear at Carlisle Crown Court on 2 August.

In a statement issued by Cumbria Police, Mr Jackson's family said they wanted to express their "sincere thanks to the members of the public and the first responders who attended the scene and tried to save George".

"We will be forever thankful for the hard work you demonstrated," the statement said.

"George was one of a kind. His thirst for knowledge and unique sense of humour, as well as his kind nature and helpful manner, made him unforgettable.

“We are devastated by the nature of this incident. But as a family, we are thankful for the time that we had with George, and will always hold our memories close to our hearts."

Officers investigating the crash are appealing for information from any witnesses.
