Boy led to safety after chip shop fire

A boy was led to safety and three people left their flats after a fire broke out in a chip shop.

The shop was on the ground floor of a three-storey building in Stafford Street, Wolverhampton, which had a basement and also bedsits and a flat on the floors above.

“Three people had freed themselves from the residential accommodation before we arrived and one boy was led to safety by firefighters," West Midlands Fire Service said. "There were no injuries or casualties.”

Crews who were called shortly after 20:10 GMT put out the fire with three jets and left the scene at 00:45 GMT. The blaze is thought to have started in a chip fryer.

“All the flats and the basement were searched and everyone was accounted for”, a fire service statement said.

Firefighters were sent to the scene from Wolverhampton, Walsall, Fallings Park, Tettenhall and Bilston stations, with a 4x4 brigade response vehicle.

The service said firefighters went back shortly after 06:15 GMT on Wednesday to check for hotspots but did not find any.
