Worker hurt by 'reckless' driver prompts warning

A council has urged drivers to respect road closure signs after a worker was injured when he was hit by lorry.

Cumberland Council said the driver had "ignored clearly marked" signs at the site at Sebergham Bridge, near Carlisle.

"This reckless act is completely unacceptable and emphasises the critical need for drivers to follow road safety protocols during roadworks," the local authority said.

Cumbria Police said it was called to a report of an assault, after the worker fell and hurt his hand at about lunchtime on 18 November. No-one has been arrested.

Sebergham Bridge had been shut for repairs to its parapet wall at the time.

The worker, who is part of the council's highways team, has since recovered and is back at work, the local authority confirmed.

The council said "any form of abusive behaviour" will result in appropriate legal action.

"The public are urged to respect all road closure measures and treat staff with respect," it added.
