Cost of on-street parking permits set to rise

The cost of on-street parking permits for residents in Leicester is set to be increased by £10 per year.

Leicester City Council runs a parking scheme on more than 200 streets where residents pay £25 a year to park near their home.

But it has said the costs of running the scheme have increased and it can no longer afford to "absorb" the rise.

Residents' parking permits are set to increase in cost to £35 from 1 April, while the cost of annual visitor permits will rise from £30 to £40 and 24-hour visitor permits will go up from £1 to £2.

A letter sent to residents, which has been seen by the Local Democracy Reporting Service, said: "Following a review of the fee structure for residents' parking permits, we have identified the need for change to ensure the continued provision of this service.

"The residents' parking permit fees have remained unchanged since the schemes were first introduced, despite increasing running costs and significant budgetary pressures.

"We are no longer able to absorb these costs, and as a result, new charges will be implemented for permits issued from 1st April onwards."
