A murder investigation is under way after an inmate died at a prison in Leicestershire.

The 31-year-old, who police have not yet named, was found unresponsive in his cell at HMP Fosse Way on Tuesday and pronounced dead at the scene.

Six men - 18, 21, 27, 28, 35 and 38 - have been detained on suspicion of murder.

A Leicestershire Police spokesperson said five of the men, all prisoners, remained in custody, while the 35-year-old has been released under investigation.

Police added no weapons had been recovered, and confirmed officers were treating the death as suspicious.

Det Insp Mark Parish, from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit (EMSOU), said: "We continue to work closely with the prison to establish the full circumstances in relation to the incident."

The Category C prison was first opened in June 2023 and replaced the former HMP Glen Parva, which closed in 2017.

Serco, which manages the prison, confirmed the death and police investigation, but declined to comment further.

A spokesperson for the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman said it was conducting its own investigation into the death.

"We offer our condolences to their friends and family," they said.

"The final investigation report will be published on our website once the inquest has concluded."
