A man in his 20s has died after being hit by a car as he crossed a road in Leicester.

Leicestershire Police said the pedestrian was struck by a Mercedes-Benz C-Class in Welford Road, near its junction with Almond Road, at about 23:30 BST on Friday.

He was taken to hospital with serious injuries but was pronounced dead a short time later, the force said.

The driver of the car – a man in his 50s – stopped at the scene and has been spoken to by officers, and police said the circumstances were "under investigation".

Welford Road and University Road were both closed for about 12 hours after it happened.

Det Sgt Mike Streer said: "Officers are currently reviewing CCTV in the area, but it is believed the driver of the Mercedes headed out of the city along Welford Road prior to the collision.

"Anyone who was also travelling along Welford Road in either direction is asked to contact us if they think they saw the car or have captured footage of the car on dashcam."
