New contractor appointed for sinkhole road

A new contractor has been appointed to take over the repair of a sinkhole site in Jersey.
The stretch of road, in the La Pouquelaye area of St Helier, was closed in December due to the sinkhole, caused by a burst water main on Rouge Bouillon.
Closures remain in place due to ongoing building concerns at the junction, which could be unsafe for pedestrians and residents.
As part of the stabilisation process, scaffolding has been erected in preparation for the installation of steel strapping, which will help secure the building.
Structural engineers will then investigate soil conditions under the foundations and all the external structures and boundary walls will then be demolished.
Infrastructure and Environment said it understood the closure had significant impact on daily travel and local businesses, but that the road would only reopen once the buildings were stabilised and all risks of structural collapse had been mitigated.
