Work to create new bus interchange set to begin

Work is set to begin on creating a new bus interchange in a town in Sandwell, as part of a regeneration project.
The new interchange will be around Market Place, Blackheath, and will serve all town centre services, Sandwell Borough Council said.
Also included in plans is a new landscaped public space, which would replace the existing traffic island. Five zebra crossings will be added, as well as loading spaces placed closer to local businesses.
The work is expected to begin on 31 March and will be completed by November.
The authority said temporary traffic plans would be in place for the works, and the town centre and Blackheath Market would be open and accessible during this time.
It is being funded by £2,891,252 in investment from the government's Town Fund programme.
Upon completion, traffic will still be able to travel through the town centre, in line with people's feedback from a prior public consultation.
The council added that the new interchange and road layout would improve the flow of traffic, while buses would be able to dock properly at stops which would offer safe access for people with mobility issues or pushchairs.
"This project aims to encourage more people to visit Blackheath town centre and will support shoppers, businesses and traders," said Cllr Peter Hughes, cabinet member for regeneration and infrastructure.
"We are creating an inviting public space and making it easier to access public transport links as well as improving safety and reducing congestion.
"Together with our contractor, we will continue to work closely with businesses, traders and residents in the town centre to keep disruption to a minimum while we carry out these improvements."
