Firefighters have put out a fire after a large pile of fly-tipped tyres was set alight and sent dark clouds of smoke into the sky.

Crews from Burford, Carterton and Faringdon were called to Bradwell Grove, Burford, on Wednesday shortly before 19:40 BST.

Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue Service said firefighters worked through the night and left the site at about midday on Thursday, having used "large volumes" of water to put out the fire and cool the tyres.

The fire service said smoke from the fire had lessened significantly on Thursday but surges had been likely as the tyres were moved to put out hotspots.

Residents were urged to keep windows and doors closed to prevent the smoke entering homes.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown.
