Plans to revamp the Tides Leisure Centre were approved by Dover District Council last July

The decision to close part of a Kent leisure centre at the end of March has been referred for review in response to "overwhelming public concern" about its impact.

A £19m revamp of Tides Leisure Centre in Deal was approved by Dover District Council's (DDC) cabinet in July last year.

Earlier this month, it was confirmed that, subject to cabinet approval, the swimming pool and gym would close by 31 March, while it was hoped that its tennis centre and sports hall would remain open, but a nine-month closure from 1 April has since been agreed.

This decision has now been referred for review following an intervention by Conservative councillors from Deal, Walmer and the surrounding villages.

The Conservative group elected to call this decision in to the DDC overview and scrutiny committee amid concerns that the cabinet had not adequately considered the impact of the temporary closure on users of the tennis centre and sports hall.

After meeting on Monday, the committee voted to refer the decision back to the cabinet for review.

A statement from the Conservative group says the move "reflects overwhelming public concern about the closure" and how it will impact those who use the facilities.

The cabinet has been asked to look again at "all available options" to keep the amenities open until the new contract begins in January 2026.

DDC has said the revamp, which includes a new six-lane swimming pool, larger gym, range of fitness studios and a café, would make the centre fit for purpose for the next 50 years.

The cabinet is due to meet again on 3 February.
