Pub arsonist given suspended prison sentence

An arsonist has been given a suspended prison sentence after admitting setting a pub on fire shortly before Christmas.
The Green Man in Clophill, Bedfordshire, was severely damaged and eight people were taken to hospital on 21 December 2022.
Ian Chalmers, 66, from Campton, pleaded guilty to arson with recklessness as to whether life was endangered.
A judge at Luton Town Crown Court gave him a two year prison sentence, suspended for two years, instructed him to carry out 200 hours community work and pay a £187 surcharge.

Tony Button, 48, from Kempston, has denied arson with intent to endanger life.
He will stand trial on 20 June.
