Beach car park closed due to subsidence, says trust

A beach car park in Devon is closed to the public "until further notice" due to subsidence, the National Trust has said.

In a post on its website, the charity said the beach at Wembury in the South Hams remained open, but the car park would be closed due to a "severe crack in the lane on the way up to the car park".

"We are working with highways to resolve this as quickly as possible," it added.

The National Trust said it was "waiting on an urgent update" on "what repairs are required for the access road to the car park".

The trust said: "The access road, which is not owned by the National Trust, leads to the beach and was damaged while South West Water carried out repairs to a burst sewage pipe at the nearby sewage station.

"Repairs to the sewage pipe are complete."

South West Water said an investigation found the crack was just on the surface, but the road itself was in an unstable condition.

It added the work to fix the burst pipe would not have caused the road itself to subside.
