Thousands embrace muddy castle race and festival

Thousands of racers and music fans faced different muddy challenges in Dumfries and Galloway at the weekend.

Difficult conditions were always expected at the Tough Mudder event at Drumlanrig Castle on Saturday.

However, the Eden Festival at Raehills Estate near Beattock also experienced some very boggy ground.

Participants at both events took the challenge in their stride despite the recent heavy rain.

Tough Mudder saw about 8,000 competitors take part in a gruelling obstacle-course in the grounds of the castle near Thornhill.

Brand marketing manager Emelye Ferguson said: "We love coming back to Drumlanrig Castle to see thousands of people go beyond what they thought they were capable of.

"You guys brought the energy and we brought the mud in a Tough Mudder classic course that was full of obstacles and surprises.

"We're already excited to come back for the 2025 event."

The conditions were similarly challenging for music fans at the Eden Festival after downpours made underfoot conditions very boggy.

However, festival-goers insisted it did not spoil their enjoyment.

Ian and Emma Grant, from Inch, were among those attending.

"Eden has always got a really lovely vibe," said Emma.

"People always have a really good time here, whatever the weather. I love coming here, it's just good craic."

Ian thought the adverse conditions simply added to the experience.

He said: "The mud sort of gets folk together, everybody is struggling through.

"We'll see the weekend out and have a good laugh."

More than 200 acts appeared across 10 stages throughout the weekend with everything from Ska-infused Dub to disco music.

Charlotte Woods from Edinburgh was attending her first ever festival.

"I've had such a great time, the music's amazing," she said.

"It's a bit muddy and I'm sinking, but it makes the experience."

Valerie Wilson and Euan Stevens travelled from Ayrshire to make their first visit to the Eden Festival garden.

Valerie said: "It's a wee bit mucky but I'm loving it.

"It's a great atmosphere and everybody is still in great spirits."
