A star of the hit TV series Gavin & Stacey has teased fans they will need to watch the final episode to see if answers are given about what happened on the show's often-referenced fishing trip.

Robert Wilfort, who plays Jason West in the comedy series, spoke to BBC Three Counties Radio on a fishing trip in his hometown of Chesham in Buckinghamshire.

"I'm under strict instructions not to reveal any details, we want no spoilers, so you'll just have to watch on Christmas Day," he said.

"I'm fully prepared for it to go on my gravestone: 'What happened on the fishing trip?'"

A recurring joke in the series is a disturbing incident that happened on a fishing trip Jason took with his uncle Bryn, played by Rob Brydon.

"People go mad trying to figure out what happened... it's really lovely to be in this thing that has captured people's imaginations," said Wilfort.

The actor moved to Chesham with his family 15 years ago - originally he is from Porthcawl in Wales, "about half-hour down the road from Barry", where the show is set.

Ahead of the final episode, which will air on Christmas Day, he has been re-watching the show with his daughter who has been watching it for the first time.

Gavin & Stacey originally ran from 2007 to 2010, with a Christmas special in 2019.

"We finally thought she was old enough to watch it... We're nearly at the end of series three and she's loving it. She's sitting there going, 'Oh, Dad'," said Wilfort.

Filming for Gavin & Stacey: The Finale started in September and wrapped on 7 October.

Wilfort said the cast were emotional as cameras rolled for the last time.

He recalled: "There were lots of tears on set... Ruth (Jones) and James (Corden) were very specific so that the last episode would have as many of the cast as possible."

Asked if there were plans for a Gavin & Stacey film, the actor said he was not aware of any but he would be willing to take part.

"I would be part of anything that Ruth and James want to do, I'd be there at the drop of a hat," he said.

"There is a danger of dragging it out, I don't think the public feel like that that, the public love it, but I think artistically there is a point you think 'how much longer can we keep doing this?'"

The final episode of Gavin & Stacey will air on BBC iPlayer and BBC One on 25 December at 20:00 GMT.
