Police have launched an investigation after a man was shot.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary said the man was "seriously assaulted" at the junction of St Mark's Road, Northbrook Road and Nichols Road in Southampton on Thursday evening.

Emergency services were called at 22:08 GMT to a man in his 30s with a gunshot wound to his arm.

He has been taken to hospital where he remains in a stable condition. His injuries are not thought to be life threatening, police said.

Police are at the scene carrying out enquiries, and road closures are in place.

A police spokesperson said: "We do not currently believe there to be a wider risk to the public. We are carrying out enquiries as a matter of urgency in order to identify and locate those responsible.

"Officers will remain in the area today and can be approached with any concerns, information or questions."

The force is keen to hear from anyone who was in the vicinity of Derby Road, St Mark's Road, Northbrook Road, or Nichols Road shortly after 22:00 on Thursday.
