A pair of North Yorkshire hairdressers have entered the record books after taking part in the world's largest styling session.

Kelly Young, who has run a salon in Knaresborough for more than 20 years, and colleague Helen Baxter, were among about 1,200 stylists taking part in the challenge on the Spanish island of Ibiza.

The pair joined stylists from across the globe to work on hundreds of volunteers who acted as models during Tuesday's event.

Ms Young said: "I don't know how they pulled this off - it was absolutely incredible."

A square in Ibiza Town was transformed into an outdoor hair salon for the challenge

The Paseo de Vara de Rey, a square in Ibiza Town, was transformed into an outdoor salon for the challenge, which was organised by an Italian hair products brand.

Ms Young told BBC Radio York: "It was a 300m (984ft) row of hairdressers - with a mirror, a plug socket, a chair and a model."

"We all congregated in one square, we had music on and a DJ and everyone was getting pumped up.

"It was so well organised - it was unreal," she said.

Speaking about the volunteer whose hair she styled, Ms Young said: "I was quite lucky, mine was very long hair, so I was able to curl it with straighteners and put it up - the before and after picture needed to look like you'd done something to the hair.

"As long as we were all simultaneously styling for 10 minutes, that was in the rules and every picture had to be verified," she added.

Guinness World Record judges carefully monitored every aspect of the event, ensuring that the strict rules for validating it were met.

The verdict was announced at 22:00 at a party at the Pacha nightclub, when it was confirmed they had officially achieved the feat with a total of 478 people styling hair simultaneously.
