Fire at former Glasgow hospice was started deliberately

Watch: Crews tackle fire at former Glasgow hospice

Police have launched an investigation into a fire that damaged a B-listed building in Glasgow on Monday night.

Firefighters battled the blaze at the former Prince and Princess of Wales hospice on Carlton Place throughout the night, after flames caused the roof to partially collapse.

Police Scotland has confirmed the incident was being treated as wilful fire-raising and inquiries were ongoing.

No-one was injured in the blaze.

The property has been unoccupied since 2018, when a new £21m hospice opened in Glasgow's Bellahouston Park.

In January, five teenagers were rescued from another fire at the site, which police had treated as deliberate.

At the time Glasgow City Council said its building standards team was aware of the condition of the building, which had previously been marked for redevelopment.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Around 20:20 on Monday, 5 August, 2024 we were called to a building fire on Carlton Place in Glasgow.

"Emergency services attended and there were no reports of injuries. The fire is being treated as wilful and inquiries are ongoing.”
