Derelict mill burnt out in overnight fire

A fire which burned through the inside of a derelict mill has been put out by crews who worked "tirelessly" overnight.

The blaze broke out at Compstall Mills on Andrew Street, Stockport at about 18:15 BST on Wednesday.

The road was shut as eight engines were called out, Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said.

Ben Levy, area manager, said firefighters had worked "through difficult conditions" to bring the blaze under control.

Andrew Street has since reopened and crews have stayed at the mill to dampen any hotspots and stop the fire starting again.

Mr Levy said the fire crews had "done incredibly well to contain the fire and reduce the impact on the local community".
