A drive to encourage elderly or frail people to swap their old, worn-out slippers for a brand new, free pair has been launched in a bid to reduce falls and injuries.

The initiative is being run by Southend-on-Sea City Council, which is holding five slipper-swap events in September.

"Proper slippers can play a significant role in preventing falls, while old, worn-out ones can lead to serious injuries, resulting in hospitalisation and a loss of independence and confidence," said Maxine Sadza, the council's cabinet member for social care.

Two previous similar events saw 450 pairs of old slippers exchanged for new ones.

The new slippers are designed with features including secure fastenings and sturdy soles, the council said.

In addition to receiving a new pair of slippers, residents will be put in touch with other support services where necessary.

The council said wearing worn-out slippers or walking barefoot or in socks could significantly increase the risk of slips, trips and falls.

Ms Sadza added: "For the health and safety of our older and frail residents, it's crucial to wear a good pair of slippers.

"Previous events helped hundreds of residents gain more independence, reassurance and confidence."
