A 21-year-old man has been arrested after another man died in a car crash.

Essex Police said it was called to the single-vehicle collision in Maplin Way North, in the Shoeburyness area of Southend-on-Sea, at about 18:45 GMT on Saturday.

A 22-year-old man from Shoebury sustained serious injuries and died at the scene despite the efforts of emergency services, police said.

The suspect, also from Shoebury, was held on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, driving without a licence and driving while unfit through drink or drugs.

He was released under investigation.

Det Insp Mark Fraser appealed for people with more information to come forward.

"My sympathies are with the family of this man at this incredibly distressing time," he said.

"My officers are carrying out a detailed investigation into this collision to establish the facts of the case."
