More than 300 fined in school roads safety scheme
More than 300 drivers have been fined after they broke the rules of a pilot scheme set up to make roads safer outside schools in Coventry.
The School Street trial is in place in five locations in the city, which involves to closure of roads outside primary schools during drop-off and pick-up times.
Drivers face £50 fines if they drive on the roads without a permit.
Coventry City Council said, since fines were brought in at the start of November, 337 drivers have been fined and 3,500 warning notices have been issued.
The measures are part of an 18-month trial outside Templars Primary School, Southfields Primary School, Stanton Bridge Primary School, Cardinal Wiseman RC School and Ravensdale Primary School, which started in September.
Automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras have been installed to catch those who flout the rules.
Four months into the trial, those living near Ravensdale Primary School have endorsed the scheme.
Those living on Ravensdale Road, which runs past the front of the school, had complained of blocked driveways and over congestion during peak times.
Many are now calling for the scheme to become a permanent feature.
One local, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "It's made the road quieter and safer for the youngsters.
"There were always massive problems before it was brought in."
The city council has been contacted for comment.
