Crack in chemicals HGV forces A63 partial closure

A lorry carrying a hazardous chemical forced the partial closure of the main route in and out of Hull because of a "crack in the container", according to the fire service.

The A63 was earlier closed in both directions, between Melton and the Humber Bridge, following reports of the HGV "having sustained damage". But it had since reopened leaving one lane shut on the eastbound carriageway, police said.

Humberside Fire and Rescue Service said while there had been "no spillage", a fire crew remained at the scene to monitor the situation.

"There is a crack in the container on the HGV and [it] does not pose a risk to the public," a spokesperson said.

The fire service said one lane remain closed on the eastbound carriageway while the HGV container was "being made safe to transport" and an engineer was on site.

Humberside Police added the Melton exit remained closed to "allow the fire service to work safely".
