Police thank public who aided stabbing victim

A senior police officer has praised members of the public for their quick response following the stabbing of a 17-year-old boy.

The incident happened shortly after 17:00 BST on Monday at the junction of Abington Street and Fish Street in Northampton town centre.

The victim remains in a stable condition in hospital having sustained significant injuries.

Ch Supt Chris Hillery from Northamptonshire Police said: "I want to take a moment to thank the many members of the public who helped at the scene. Those who went to the aid of the victim and those who contacted us to say they had witnessed the incident – your help has been invaluable."

Two people – a 17-year-old boy and a 23-year-old man – were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm and possession of an offensive weapon.

Both remain in police custody.

A third individual, a 16-year-old boy, was also arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm, possession of an offensive weapon and drug offences.

He is receiving medical care while under arrest.

Ch Supt Hillery added: "I understand this incident will cause a lot of concern for people and I would like to offer some reassurance that we don't believe there is an ongoing risk to the public.

"Officers attended the scene very quickly last night and were able to offer first aid to the victim before the arrival of paramedics."

Local officers will be in the Market Square this week with the Beat Bus to speak with residents about knife crime or other concerns.
