Scooter rider died after collapsing on bypass

A scooter rider died from injuries sustained in a collision after he collapsed during a journey, an inquest heard.

Carl Anthony Gawtry, 67, was travelling along the A63 Selby bypass on 11 April when he fell ill.

He was taken to Castle Hill Hospital for surgery before being transferred to Doncaster Royal Infirmary where he later died on 4 June.

Coroner Catherine Cundy recorded a conclusion of death in a road traffic collision, saying he had died as a result of acute chest trauma and pneumonia.

Mr Gawtry, from Carlton, near Goole, had worked for water management firm WJ UK for 25 years.

Paying tribute, the company said: "Carl was a valued and well-liked colleague.

"He was friendly and supportive to all staff, young and old, junior and senior and shared his knowledge freely.

"Everyone at WJ who knew and worked with Carl will remember him fondly and we send our condolences to his family and friends."
