A mountain rescue team has thanked two groups of walkers who helped a person who got into difficulty on England's highest peak.

The lone walker had suffered a suspected asthma attack and was becoming hypothermic near Hollow Stones, Scafell Pike, on Sunday at about 16:50 BST.

Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team (WMRT) said weather conditions were poor with wind, rain and cold temperatures, and the casualty was unable to walk.

The team praised the walkers who stayed until rescuers arrived, offered him their clothing and stayed in an emergency shelter to increase body heat.

"The walker was also incredibly grateful to you," WMRT wrote on Facebook, praising the group.

WMRT treated the casualty and then carried him down the valley on a stretcher, where he was taken to a waiting ambulance.

It follows a busy few days for the Wasdale team, who had four call-outs on Saturday.

The rescues involved helping a family group who were "ill-equipped for the conditions" and assisting a lone walker who had taken a fall and suffered minor knee and shoulder injuries.

A woman who had hit her head and became unwell near Skew Gill was also rescued and airlifted to hospital.

The final call-out was a "false alarm with good intent" after concern about flashing lights high up in the peaks near Nether Wasdale.

Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team continued to urge visitors to make use of online services that offer advice about enjoying the outdoors safely, including Adventure Smart.

It asks visitors to ask themselves three questions: "Are they fit enough for the activity? Do they know what the weather will be? Have they got the right equipment and clothing?"
