Train services were cancelled and delayed on busy commuter routes due to a fault with the signalling system.

Operator Greater Anglia said there was cable damage between Cheshunt and Broxbourne in Hertfordshire and lines were blocked.

The affected services were those between London Liverpool Street and Stansted Airport; Cambridge and Hertford East, as well as Stratford to Bishop's Stortford.

Operator Greater Anglia apologised to passengers "for any inconvenience" after urging people not to travel.

The lines reopened later in the afternoon.
