Lucky escape for seal pup tangled in fishing net
A seal has been saved after it was found on a beach entangled in fishing net.
The grey seal pup was seen in distress by members of the public in Scarborough on 26 January and taken to the town's Sea Life Centre for treatment.
Staff said they had to "work quickly" to free the animal from the netting that covered its entire body.
Todd German, who works at the centre, said: "We weren't entirely sure what to expect, as we've dealt with many entanglements and netting injuries over the years, some of which can have severe consequences."
He added: "The members of the public who discovered the pup were incredible and took all the right steps.
"We encourage anyone who finds a sick or injured seal to contact us at Sea Life Scarborough, British Divers Marine Life Rescue, or the RSPCA. We work closely together, ensuring the best and quickest response for any pup in need of attention.
"In addition to reaching out to one of our organisations, we advise maintaining a quiet, safe, and respectful distance from any sea pup you may encounter. While they may appear cute and cuddly, they can bite and will not recognise that your intentions are to help."
The young seal was uninjured despite its ordeal and has been safely returned to the sea.
