A fire that broke out at a derelict mill building in Bradford city centre was started deliberately, the fire service said.

Six crews and an aerial appliance were called to the former Barkerend Mills site on Barkerend Road at about 12:00 BST on Monday, with one person rescued from the building.

Firefighters used large jets, hose reels and breathing apparatus to tackle the fire, with the blaze extinguished by 17:30 the same afternoon.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "Our fire investigation team has established that the fire was started deliberately but investigations are continuing."

The spokesperson added that a "deliberate" fire was different to suspected arson.

"Deliberate fires are those where the motive was suspected to be deliberate," they said.

"These include fires to an individual's own property or property of another owner, but not necessarily with the intention to deliberately damage or destroy property or endanger life."
