A police officer who helped save a man's life after forcing down the door of his burning flat is among dozens of people to have been given bravery awards.

The Lancashire Police constable, who has asked to remain anonymous, managed to gain entry to the home in Leyland after the man caused a fire during what is believed to have been a psychotic episode.

He made two attempts to reach the victim, helping release smoke in the process, before being joined by firefighters to make a third successful attempt.

The crew manager confirmed that if the officer had not forced the door then there could have been a very "different outcome", the force said.

The force said elderly residents lived in neighbouring properties, some of whom had significant mobility issues and would have needed help evacuating the building if the blaze was not dealt with.

The police constable was presented with an outstanding bravery award at a ceremony held at the force's headquarters in Hutton, near Preston.

Ch Supt Stasia Osiowy said: "This event shines the spotlight on the fantastic work being done by my teams across the division every single day, and I am extremely proud of them all.

"Their personal commitment and dedication to keeping communities safe across South Lancashire is a credit to the constabulary."

Fifty seven people including police officers, detectives and police staff from across the force's South Division were presented with outstanding contribution awards at the Divisional Commander's Commendations Ceremony.

They looked to highlight "shining examples of best practice, bravery, and teamwork" the force said.
