Voucher scheme to help families over Christmas

A city council has said 13,000 children and young people in its area could be eligible for £40 supermarket vouchers this Christmas.

Peterborough City Council said children who get free school meals during term would also get the vouchers in the holidays.

Katy Cole, a Labour councillor who is the cabinet member for children's services, said: "I’m delighted that once again we will be providing supermarket vouchers to help vulnerable families over Christmas."

The vouchers will be sent out automatically by text and email - using school data and information held by the council - on 19 December, and must be redeemed by midday on 24 January.

Vouchers will be distributed to families with children who receive (under income-related criteria)

  • free school meals (aged four to 16)
  • early-years pupil premium
  • funded childcare and education for two-year-olds

Some young people over 16 may be eligible under specific criteria.

Children who become eligible up to and including 5 January 2024 will also receive vouchers - if an application has already been made.

The city council said anyone between 19 and 25 who has an education, health and care plan (EHCP) and accesses the bursary scheme or free school meals in their college are also eligible.
