Specialist officers were called to the prison just days before this attack

A member of staff at a prison in Nottinghamshire needed hospital treatment after an attack by a prisoner, it has been confirmed.

The prison officer was injured at HMP Lowdham Grange on 17 April but no details of the nature of the attack or the injuries sustained have been released.

A prison service spokesperson confirmed the officer had since been discharged.

Just days before, specialist officers were deployed to the prison after it is understood one inmate threatened to take another hostage.

A Prison Service spokesperson said: "A prison officer was treated in hospital after an attack by a prisoner at HMP Lowdham Grange.

"Police are now investigating so it would be inappropriate to comment further.

"Violence in prison will not be tolerated, and we will always push for the strongest punishment for attacks on our hard-working staff."

A spokesperson for the Prison Officers' Association said: "This is particularly concerning given the proximity to earlier incidents at Lowdham Grange and the well publicised incident at HMP Frankland.

"We are pushing for officers to be issued with stab vest and Tasers and this again shows why.

"Our message is 'give us the protection we need'."
