A set of tennis courts in Rugby are to be refurbished with funding from the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and contributions from property developers.

The courts in Caldecott Park, which first opened more than 100 years ago, will be refreshed with new surfaces, posts, nets, security gates and fencing.

They had become a target for vandals, which prompted Rugby Borough Council to trial an online booking process.

The authority said the booking system and additional security had boosted participation over a three-year trial period.

Councillor Maggie O'Rourke, portfolio holder for partnerships and wellbeing, said: "With Wimbledon still fresh in the memory, we're delighted to confirm the refurbishment of Caldecott Park's tennis courts with support from the LTA's Park Tennis Project.”

Fosse Contracts had been appointed to carry out the refurbishment, and the work is due to be completed by the end of September.

During the courts’ refurbishment, residents can book a court at Rugby School Sports Centre.

When the Caldecott Park provision reopens, people will be able to book online and use a PIN code to access the courts.

The refurbishment will cost nearly £74,000, with £50,000 being provided by the LTA.
