A man has appeared in court after a female prison officer was attacked outside HMP Norwich.

Norfolk Police was called to reports of an assault in Knox Road on Saturday, 30 November.

The victim, who was leaving work, was taken to Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.

Sam Morrison, 26, of Recorder Road, Norwich, was charged with grievous bodily harm with intent and criminal damage.

Steven Searby, of the Prison Officers' Association, said staff were shocked by the attack.

Mr Searby said the victim had been discharged from hospital but "she will be off for a long time in the future".

He added: “I can't remember in my 30 years this happening to a member of staff."

Morrison appeared at Norwich Magistrates' Court on Monday and was remanded in custody until an appearance at Norwich Crown Court in January.
