Historic landmark to close for restoration works

A Grade II listed building in the heart of a city centre is closing for restoration works.

Durham Town Hall will be shut to the public from Saturday, the county council said.

The restoration includes lime render to internal walls, works to improve the drainage, and modifications and repairs to the roof.

The medieval hall, which houses historical artefacts including the original city charter and the city's civic sword, is expected to reopen between the spring and summer of next year.

The local authority said it was working with specialist heritage consultants and contractors.

It added the repairs were "essential" to restore and preserve the building, and artefacts within it.

The Great Hall's floor will also be restored, returning to the finish it had when it first opened in 1851.
