A 43-year-old man has died following reports of a disturbance in Newcastle city centre.

Darren Tulip was found seriously injured on Grainger Street on 20 March, and died in hospital on Tuesday.

Police arrested two men in their 20s, one on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, the other on suspicion of wounding with intent to commit grievous bodily harm.

Both were later released on bail pending further inquiries, and Northumbria Police said the investigation was continuing.

Det Ch Insp Tomasz Fowler, of Northumbria Police, said: "Specially trained officers continue to support Darren's next of kin at what must be an extremely difficult time for them.

"Our investigation into the circumstances of how Darren came to sustain his injuries continues and several lines of enquiry have already been carried out.

"If you have information which could assist us but have not yet made contact, please do so."
